3 Simple Tips for Organizing a Remote Workspace

Organizing your home office workspace is different in many ways that an in-office workspace. A variety of office supplies and items that make your workspace workable are essential to your focus and your comfort. Here are some tips for getting things in order for that remote workspace!organize photo

  1. Furniture. Make sure that you have a desk with plenty of workspace. For a long time I worked with a desk that was much too small for a laptop and second monitor which left no room to write anything on paper – not even a sticky note! You do not want a cluttered space where you cannot find anything or that provides such a small amount of space that you cannot jot down simple notes. Think ergonomics as well as saving space by using a desk with a rollout keyboard tray. Look for desks with drawers or space enough underneath for a file cabinet to keep your papers.
  1. Desk Accessories. Paper bins/organizers, pen and pencil holders, mini drawer units, folders, sticky note holders, and wall calendars are all items that you can purchase without much expense that can keep your desk cleaner. This helps to keep your workspace organized and clear for the items you need throughout the work day.
  1. Online Reminders and Desktop Notifications. If you are a sticky note user to reminder you of all the things you need to do when you are at your desk, try ditching the notes and using technology! There are so many options for this. Browser extensions for apps such as Wunderlist and Any.do will pop right up to remind you of a task while at your computer. Any.do even works with Gmail to set reminders per email and if Gmail notifications are turned on, then these will pop up as you work. Most task management apps have online companions to make your life easier. So, whatever your mobile app choice, look into how it can help you while on your computer.

If you are a remote business professional, organization is key to your success. Take some time to find ways to minimize clutter, organize your items, and allow you the space you need to focus and feel comfortable all at the same time.
